It was another elite performance from Berthoud High School’s sole Maverick. Dashing, passing, shooting and yelling, Rory Carr roams the midfield at Mead High School Tuesday night during the girls lacrosse match against Horizon High School.

“It feels really good to be out here. The team has been nothing but amazing since I’ve gotten here,” she says after the game. “I’m just really grateful to be a part of this program.”

An elite college lacrosse prospect from Berthoud, Carr signed an athletic scholarship to attend Quinnipiac University last November after a phenomenal three-year stint playing for Thompson Valley High School’s girls lacrosse team.

Unfortunately, Thompson Valley’s team had to fold this season due to a lack of players and a vacant head coach role. Enter Mead.

In their inaugural year as a team last year, the Mavericks unleashed a girls lacrosse team that was made up of some of the best players in the area. After a 16-2 season, Mead won the 4A girls lacrosse state championship by defeating Castle View High School 13-5.

“I feel like the coaching here is really strong,” Carr says, explaining how it is preparing her for the next level. “There are a lot of girls on this team that push me to be better every day.”

Playing against Horizon, Carr scored five goals and assisted on three. It was another standout performance within a phenomenal high school career. Earlier this season, Carr scored her 200th career goal. “It’s just a big milestone for me,” she mentions.

The next milestone is a state title. “I’ve been so close every year,” Carr recalls from playing for Thompson Valley. But this year is different.

“As a team, we got our eye on one thing, we want to make it as far as we can this season. We definitely have our eye on the prize but also just take it game by game.”

After trouncing Horizon 14-2, Mead improved to 8-0 for the year and one step closer to returning to the state championship game.
