The Spartan baseball team mercy-ruled their sixth team this year in a Tuesday matchup against Liberty Common High School and it does not look like the ride is stopping anytime soon. After three long innings of relentless Berthoud High School scoring, the umpires called the game at 22-2.

Senior Connor Jorissen set up an illusion to make Liberty Common think they stood a chance, walking their first batter and ultimately allowing two runs at the top of the first. When sophomore Wyatt Barmes went up to bat, Liberty Common would quickly learn that their fate was sealed when the schedule was created after Barmes began the inning by smacking an infield homerun.

The barrage at the bottom of the first continued and Liberty Common could not keep the Spartans off base. Before the spectators knew it, Berthoud was up 10-2 moving into the second inning.

Jorissen had no issues at his next appearance on the mound. In the blink of an eye, he faced three batters and struck them all out. This led to another long steamroll at the bottom of the second, where again, Berthoud ran through their batting order like it was nothing.

Liberty Common made a solid attempt at rekindling their first-inning success by getting a couple of runners on base, but the effort was futile when the Spartans got their 22nd runner home, ending the game 22-2.

“We’re excited,” Head Coach Buddy Kouns said after the game. Kouns and his team have their sights set on big teams like Eaton and Resurrection Christian High School, where he says that the key to success is, “Trying to stay humble. Gotta stay humble. We’ve got a lot in front of us but the kids are playing really well.”

Berthoud’s next conference game will occur at Weld Central on April 19 at 4 p.m.
