There are seven offices up for grabs in Larimer County this November including a race to replace term-limited Sheriff Justin Smith.

The openings in the county include District 1 commissioner, sheriff, clerk and recorder, assessor, treasurer, coroner and surveyor.

All major-party candidates had until March 15 to enter the race by petition or March 19 to be nominated by assembly. Minor party candidates had until April 4 and unaffiliated candidates have until July 14.

The state’s primary election this year will be held on June 28. Ballots will be mailed out the week of June 6 and Nov. 8 is election day. Ballots for the November election will be mailed Oct. 17 according to Larimer County’s clerk and recorder’s website.

Current Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith (R) is term-limited and will challenge incumbent county commissioner John Kefalas (D) for the District 1 seat. District 1 encompasses the northern third of the county. Berthoud is located in District 3 and is represented by commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally (D).

Smith has endorsed Fort Collins Police Services Assistant Chief John Feyen (R) to fill his seat in the race for Larimer County sheriff. Former Loveland Police Department Sgt. Jeff Fisher (R) is also running for the office.

On Feyen’s campaign website it states his platform encompasses protecting individual constitutional rights, notes his time serving Larimer County as a police officer and continued commitment to serve, and states he welcomes input and accountability and resolving complex issues by collaboration with the community. “I want to be your sheriff because I believe the citizens of Larimer County and the men and women who serve nobly at the sheriff’s office deserve a leader who can lead with transparency and integrity, who has shown a commitment to the community, who has the relationships with other leaders in our community to begin conversations with our citizens to solve problems,” Feyen stated in a campaign video. Feyen began his career as a firefighter and paramedic in 1987 and transitioned to law enforcement in 2000.

The platform Fisher is running on includes, his commitment to public safety and transparency which his campaign website states is illustrated by his years of service from Patrol Officer to Deputy Chief of police in Weld, Larimer and Boulder Counties, he believes law enforcement is, “something done with the community and not to the community,” being fiscally responsible, and a principled accountability to excellence. Additionally, the website states, “Jeff will establish Values, a Mission Statement and goals for the Sheriff’s Office which reflect and reinforce his commitment to protecting the life, property and the Constitutional rights of all community members through excellent public safety service. The cornerstones of these values will be: Communication, Accountability, Respect, Transparency.” The site also states Fisher believes the Sheriff’s Office must accurately reflect the demographics of Larimer County and will increase the representation of women and people of color. Fisher is endorsed by the sheriffs of Adams, Grand and Jackson Counties.

For the clerk and recorder office, Angela Myers (R) is running for reelection against challenger Toni Baker (D).

Irene Josey (R) is currently running unopposed for treasurer in her third and final term.

Assessor Bob Overbeck (D) is not term-limited and is running against David Eisenbraun (R).
