Four former Spartan athletes will be inducted at the 2024 Berthoud Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on May 22. This year, Loveland Ford and Loveland Buick GMC are serving as title sponsors for the banquet.

The four former student-athletes of Berthoud High School (BHS) were chosen for their sporting achievements and community involvement.

Coming from the class of ’69 is the first inductee, Mark French. While well known in these newspaper pages for his excellent stories on the history of Berthoud, before he became Berthoud’s chief historian he was known for his prowess on the hardwood. As a varsity basketball player, French owns the school record for most points in a game with 47.

After high school, French taught at Lyons High School where he also coached basketball. In addition, he has also worked tirelessly to uphold and preserve Berthoud’s history.

Staying on the basketball court, Bridgett Murtagh Weaver is the next inductee. A star basketball player, Weaver was an all-state selection as a junior and senior for the Lady Spartans. She also played softball at BHS. Weaver then received a full-ride scholarship to play at Western Nebraska Community College.

Weaver then finished her collegiate basketball career at Western State College in Gunnison before receiving her doctorate in physical therapy from Texas Tech University. For the past six years, she has also assisted with coaching the girls basketball team at BHS.

Staying in the family, the next inductee is Weaver’s sister, Maggie Murtagh. Playing three sports, Murtagh was an all-state selection in basketball, softball and track and field as a senior. In her final year, she led the state in three-pointers for basketball and steals for softball.

Murtagh also attended Western Nebraska Community College to play basketball before finishing with a bachelor’s degree in business from Colorado State University. She has since coached a variety of sports in Berthoud, including youth T-ball, middle school volleyball, basketball and track. Murtagh also spent the past seven years helping coach girls basketball at BHS.

The final inductee is Maggie Sharp Rembo. Rembo was an all-state selection for basketball and was named the area player of the year by the Loveland Reporter-Herald. She was also a member of the back-to-back girls basketball state championship team in the early 90s in addition to playing volleyball.

After high school Rembo attended Western Nebraska Community College. She currently lives in Loveland where her children attend high school.

The Berthoud Sports Hall of Fame will host a banquet at Brookside Events Center on May 22. Tickets are $25 and include dinner. To register and purchase tickets, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/berthoud-sports-hall-of-fame-banquet-tickets-808593022497.
