The Town of Berthoud plans to celebrate freedom and democracy one day ahead of the traditional observance of the July 4 Independence Day holiday. The family-centered celebration will run from 4 to 9 p.m., Monday, July 3, on the grounds of Waggener Park, near the Berthoud Recreation Center.

The event, which is free for everyone, will kick off at 4 p.m. with a variety of food trucks, inflatables and family activities in the park. There will also be a beer garden for adults.
Special musical guests, the funk band Funkiphino, will begin playing at 5:30 p.m. Self-described as “a 13 member high-energy funk band infusing explosive horn lines, old-school Hammond organ sounds, and pumpin’ bass with intoxicating vocal harmonies,” Funkiphino has a reputation for livening up any gathering. They have performed at a wide variety of events, from a presidential inaugural ball in Washington, D.C., to socialite weddings and Denver Bronco special events.
Temporary parking restrictions will be in place around the park and adjacent neighborhoods prior to and during the celebration.

Food trucks attending the event will include:
Backyard Bird • Ba Nom a Nom • Big Meat Wagon
• B Sweet Cupcakes • Cilantro and Lime • Joe Zeppy’s
Italian Sandwich and Deli • Kona Ice • Krazy Thai
• Nacho Mama’s Tacos • Short D’s Coffee • Southern Twist
Food • Sweaty Moose

For many, barbeques and backyard fireworks are a tradition, and when used responsibly and legally, provide safe family fun. Here are three easy tips to ensure celebrations are legal, safe and responsible.

• Stay legal: Local laws vary widely, from the type of product that is legal — to the times in which fireworks can be used. Know your local laws, and only use fireworks that are approved where you live. Local fire departments can provide information about what is legal in your community. It’s also very important to only purchase fireworks from a licensed retailer.

• Be safe: Be selective when choosing a location. Pick a dry, flat surface such as concrete, dirt, or pavement that is away from structures and vegetation, and is free of debris. Always read and follow the instructions and have a hose or water source ready.

• Act responsibly: After the show, let your fireworks take a bath to cool down. Soak them in a metal bucket overnight and outside at a site that is away from structures before properly disposing. Have a sober adult handle your display and do not let children use fireworks. Be considerate of neighbors and pets. When the show is over, clean up the area so that it is free of debris.
