The young Spartans, who Head Coach Michael Pelphrey described as one without any egos, the true definition of a team, scored 16 points in the final 2:30 of the game. Berthoud scored on a long touchdown pass and then converted the two-point conversion, they then recovered an on-sides kick, drove the field and scored again on fourth and goal before making good on yet another two-point conversion. Even after that, Berthoud still had to seal the win by tackling the Walt Clark quarterback with three seconds left in the game. Coach Pelphrey described the game as “the most unbelievable experience of my coaching career.” While participation in football has been lacking in recent years, the Spartan’s small but determined group banded together overcame extraordinary adversity and learned that championships can only be won when everyone comes together and never, ever gives up.
