An accident on Monday evening that killed a 32-year-old woman from Loveland severely damaged an overpass on I-25 and resulted in an extended road closure.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. Monday after the arm of a backhoe that was being hauled by a tractor-trailer struck the bridge near milepost 245 and Weld County Road 34 at the Mead exit.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Trooper Josh Lewis confirmed that both the tractor-trailer and then a Honda SUV were both traveling northbound in the right lane when the accident occurred. After the arm hit the overpass a piece of the concrete bridge fell on the SUV on the driver’s side windshield.

The Honda had two occupants at the time of the incident the Loveland woman who was pronounced dead at the scene and her 10-year-old son who was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene following the crash and was not injured.

All northbound and southbound lanes on I-25 were closed at milepost 245 until around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday giving inspectors time to assess the bridge.

Jared Fiel, spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation said Tuesday evening that the damage to the bridge was still being assessed for the best way to proceed with repairs. Fiel said the project would be overseen by CDOT and a timeline for when the bridge may reopen is unknown.
