Today is Veteran’s Day and there is much to be celebrated.  This is not to be confused with Memorial Day.  Today is a day to celebrate those that have served our country proudly.  We are selling poppies to raise money for veterans in need on Thursday.  We have other upcoming events and are welcoming veterans as well as guests.

Veteran’s Day is a day to celebrate those that have served our country and sacrificed everything for our liberty and freedom.  This is not to be confused with Memorial Day, where we celebrate and honor those that died protecting the same.  If you don’t have any veterans in your family, it is still encouraged to visit veteran sites and memorials with family.  Many veterans do not know what to say when someone says “thank you for your service.”  I feel it is simple to respond, “thank you for your support.”  While veterans are selfless in what they have done in service of our country, it is important to remember that people want to show their support.  It is also important to remember that not all veterans were welcomed home with the same support.  Vietnam veterans deserve to get the welcome home that they did not receive upon their return.

Today, you can find our Berthoud VFW booth at Hay’s Market from 2 to 4 in the afternoon.  Then you can find us at Derby Grille from 5-9 p.m.  We will be selling our VFW poppies to raise money in our account for local veterans in need.  This is something that has helped veterans with urgent needs like car and home repairs, groceries, help with bills, etc.  Please come to these locations if you’d like to contribute to that cause.  We have used this service for multiple Berthoud veterans in need.  Also, I encourage anyone to reach out to me if they know of any veterans in need.

We will also have our annual “Veterans Dinner” from 5 to 9 p.m. this Saturday.  We will be announcing the accomplishments of our Berthoud Veterans Club this past year.  We will also be honoring local businesses and organizations that support the veteran community.  The dinner is free for veterans and we are asking for donations via the website or at the dinner.  This will include silent auction items and other ways to donate.  Donations at the dinner and the silent auction winners will need to have cash, check, or Venmo.  The food will be catered by Berthoud’s own, Cornerstone Café.  All attendees will need to get tickets through our website at www.berthoudvfw.com.  Today is the final day to get tickets, for food and seating purposes.

While I am a veteran, it is my purpose now to celebrate and honor our men and women in uniform and fellow veterans.  I am no hero, but I have stood next to many heroes.  I am proud to carry the legacy of the brave heroes from our community that paid the ultimate sacrifice.  Today, I honor those that are serving and have served.  I hope that you will join me in the same.  If you know anyone that would like to join our Berthoud VFW, Berthoud American Legion, or the Auxiliary, please reach out to me.  Happy Veteran’s Day to all of my brothers and sisters!
