By: Amber McIver-Traywick | The Surveyor | August 05, 2021 | Education

Thompson School District communicated officially with students and staff today that they will not require masks going into the 2021-22 school year at this time. In an email that went out to all families in the district, it was stated that, “As with all other instances throughout the pandemic, these guidelines have been developed in consultation with our partners at the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment.”

Additional information shared from the district included details about screening for the virus and other safety precautions being taken as the new school year quickly approaches. That information can be read below.

The District did point out that the situation is fluid saying,  “Please note that changes to this policy may be necessary based on data, community trends and future direction from county and state officials.”

The email concluded by saying “The pandemic continues to have a significant impact throughout our community. We are extremely grateful for your support and your patience as we work together to provide the best possible educational experience for each student.  We are excited to welcome you back for the 2021-2022 school year and look forward to seeing you soon!”

General Information

The latest guidance from state health professionals provides flexibility to local entities regarding the usage of face masks and other COVID-19 safety protocols. At this time, face masks are recommended, but will not be required for any students or staff members in schools and district buildings. TSD is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment for each of our students and staff members. Those who prefer to continue to wear a face mask are encouraged to do so and their decision will be fully supported by district staff. Per federal law, students who ride on TSD buses will be required to wear face masks while on-board.

Please note that changes to this policy may be necessary based on data, community trends and future direction from county and state officials. Adjustments could include additional face mask requirements at the school and/or district level. TSD staff will continue to partner with local and state health department officials as we move forward into the new school year.

Thompson School District will also work with county officials and local entities to promote additional COVID-19 vaccine opportunities for students and families. Please click here to visit Larimer County’s vaccine website, where you can learn more about COVID-19 vaccine clinics and register for an appointment.

Safety Information

In accordance with guidance by the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, Thompson School District will implement a layered approach in order to mitigate risk from COVID-19. Several actions will be taken in schools to help keep students and staff safe, including the following:

  • Symptom Screening: Students, teachers or staff who are experiencing new and uncommon symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, should stay home and seek testing.
  • Handwashing: Proper and frequent handwashing and sanitation are encouraged, as well as proper respiratory etiquette (covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing)
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures will be maintained, including regular disinfection of high-touch surfaces.
  • Ventilation: Building ventilation will remain at an increased level, including higher introduction of outside air, continuous exhaust and longer system run-times.
  • Testing: COVID-19 testing will be available at each school site for staff and students who are symptomatic. Parents must consent and be physically present on-site for any testing to take place.
  • Vaccinations:  Opportunities for COVID-19 vaccines will be available at all secondary schools. More information will be shared with families as it becomes available.
