October 14, 2015 | Obituaries

Ruth E. Mathis, 75, of Berthoud, Colo., joined the angels on Oct. 5 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. She was born in Coburg, Iowa to Carl and Minnie (Sweeten) Carlson on Sept. 23, 1940. Ruth was one of five brothers and sisters raised in Iowa, and two of her sisters survive to this day; Marianne and Shirley.

Ruth met her loving husband, Cleo Mathis, during her senior year of high school and the couple was married June 21, 1959, in Red Oak, Iowa. Later they moved to Boulder, Colo., where they resided for 30 years. Cleo served in the U.S. Army.
For the past 16 years Cleo and Ruth lived in Berthoud, Colo., where they recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker; and together, she and

Cleo owned and operated Mathis Printing, Inc., while they lived in Boulder for over 25 years. Ruth enjoyed making and selling jewelry, camping and fishing. Ruth always caught the biggest fish. Gambling was so much fun for them; they loved the slot machines. Together they were snowbirds in Tucson, Ariz., and are longtime members of the Boulder BPO Elks No. 566. Quiet time was enjoyed sitting on her swing in Crystal Lakes in Red Feather Lakes, Colo., and peacefully watching wildlife.

Ruth is survived by her loving husband, Cleo; daughter, Brenda Hittle of Fort Collins; son, Curtis Mathis of Arvada, Colo.; six grandchildren, Skylar Hittle, Maxwell Hittle, Zachary Hittle, Brittany Mathis, Elijah Hittle and Alex Mathis; two great grandchildren, Maddie Mathis and newborn baby, Noah; two sisters, Shirley Dekay and Marian Johnson.

She is preceded by her wonderful son-in-law, Carl Hittle; brothers, John Carlson and Donald; and sister, Dorothy Riedemann.

Memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16 at the Boulder Elks Club at 3975 28th St., Boulder.
