On April 7, 2020, the Town of Berthoud will be holding a municipal election via mail-in ballot for mayor and three trustee seats. The terms of current Mayor Wil Karspeck and Trustees Paul Alaback, Jeff Hindman and Brain Laak end this April. All four available seats will be for a four-year term.

In order to be qualified to seek office as mayor or as a town trustee, an interested party must be a citizen of the United States, a registered voter 18 years of age or older, and a resident of the Town of Berthoud for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding election day. It should be noted that no person can seek two separate elected positions simultaneously.

Those seeking to run for mayor or town trustee are required to pick up an election packet from the town clerk’s office at 807 Mountain Ave. In order to have your name appear on the ballot, prospective candidates must collect 10 valid signatures from registered voters, who are Berthoud residents, on the nomination petition, which will be available and may be circulated Jan. 7 – 27, 2020. It is highly recommended prospective candidates collect more than the bare minimum 10, should one or more of the signatures be deemed invalid.

Furthermore, the circulator’s affidavit must be notarized after prospective candidates have finished gathering the required number of signatures. Prospective candidates are also required to complete the acceptance of nomination form and hand-deliver all completed materials to the town clerk’s office by close of business on Jan. 27.

The Berthoud town website provides a great deal of additional information, including a municipal candidate’s guide and elected official starter’s kit. Also available are all the needed campaign finance information and documentation: Campaign Finance Manual, Candidate Affidavit, Candidate Committee Registration Form, Contribution and Expenditure Report, Statement of Non-Expenditure and Statement of Personal Expenditures.

The campaign finance deadlines which all must be filed with the town clerk are as follows: First deadline: March 17, 2020, second deadline: April 3, 2020, final deadline: May 7, 2020. Should any of the deadlines be missed, late fees will be assessed, Annual reports must be filed if the committee does not expend all funds received.

This spring ballots will be mailed to all active registered voters from March 16 through March 23 and completed ballots must be returned to town hall no later than 7 p.m. on April 7.

Copies of some of the documentation necessary and further information for prospective candidates can be found at http://www.berthoud.org/departments/administration/town-clerk/elections. To reach the Berthoud town clerk office via telephone, dial 970-344-5800.
