Maria Johnson

Maria Johnson died of natural causes on the morning of Feb. 20, 2022, while in residence at the Hover Greenhouse Nursing Facility after suffering a fall.

Marie was born in Czechoslovakia (now part of Poland) in 1923. She lived with her father (mother, deceased) until the Nazis took him as a captive in World War II. As a young girl, Marie was sent by the Nazis to Austria to a work farm for three years. She was later sent to a concentration camp where she suffered additional hardship and abuse for two more years.

After the war, she married an American soldier and moved to Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he was redeployed and never returned home. Marie then married a man she had met at her work, Ivan Johnson, a widower with three sons. Marie and Ivan were married for nearly 50 years until his death in 2001.

Marie is survived by her sons Ken Johnson of Firestone, Colo. (Colleen); Bob Johnson of Berthoud, Colo. (Sandy). Her son David Johnson and wife Carrie predeceased her. She is also survived by five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In lieu of a funeral service, a celebration of her life will be held at the home of Bob and Sandy Johnson on Sunday, March 6, from 2 – 4 p.m. Contributions in her memory can be made to Apple Leaf Assisted Living, 1328 N. First St., Berthoud, CO 80513.
