A former social studies teacher at Turner Middle School in Berthoud was sentenced last week to 10 years of Sex Offender Intensive Supervision Program (SOISP) after having an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old student.

Kyle Faust

Kyle Faust, 25, was sentenced by Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Sarah Cure to the SOISP intensive probation for the charge of sexual exploitation of a child that he plead guilty to in February of this year.

Faust had six other charges against him that were dismissed by the district attorney’s office as part of a plea agreement. The original charges Faust faced could have resulted in a sentence of four to 12 years in prison.

The program Faust was sentenced to is a required intensive probation program for non-violent, low-risk sex offenders who were not sentenced to prison. The SOISP carries many obligations and severe restrictions on the probationers’ rights. Violating any of these conditions can get probationers sent to prison to serve out their full sentence. Faust will be required to participate in a sex offender evaluation and sex offender treatment program, as well as having no contact with children. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender with the state along with several other stipulations including no use of alcohol or drugs.

Faust was arrested in June, 2021 after the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office received a Safe2Tell report alleging an inappropriate sexual relationship between a teacher and student at Turner Middle School. Further investigation revealed the teacher was Faust and the victim was a 13-year-old girl. The crimes against the victim began in March of 2021 and occurred both at and away from the school. Investigators executed a search and arrest warrant for Faust who was taken into custody without incident at his Thornton residence.

Faust had worked at Turner Middle School from January until May of 2021.
