There are changes afoot as Berthoud’s popular farmer’s market updates its name, day and time this year. Starting on June 8, the Fickel Farmer’s Market will now be open on Thursday evenings from 4-7 p.m. in Fickel Park at 620 Mountain Ave.

New farmer’s market coordinator, Steve Hensley, who is also Berthoud’s recreation supervisor, is heading up the changes and hopes Thursday evenings will bring even more residents into the market. Since most other nearby farmer’s markets are open on Saturday mornings, they’re hoping Thursday evenings will be a better fit.

“It’s Colorado,” says Hensley, “we like to be outside. A lot of people go camping on the weekends or have other activities planned for Saturday mornings. We’re hoping they will stop by Fickel Park on their way home from work on Thursdays to load up on the food they’ll need for the weekend.” He says it’s also a benefit for vendors, who now have an additional option for selling.

There are still spots open for additional vendors. Each vendor pays a flat $35 fee to set up in the park. “It’s a little higher than last year,” says Hensley, “but we won’t be taking a percentage of sales on top of that as most other farmer’s markets do.”

Vendors include local growers and food producers, as well as artists, crafters and local businesses. To register for a space go to www.berthoud.org/1385/The-Fickel-Farmers-Market or call Steve Hensley directly at 970-344-5407.

According to their website, the mission of the Fickel Farmers Market is “to provide a space for our vibrant community of growers, producers, and makers by supporting, educating, and expanding sustainable agriculture. By facilitating this community resource, [they] strive to strengthen relationships between local food production and food consumers by educating, nourishing, and making local food accessible for all of our community.”
