Disembodied spirits haunt a family home in Berthoud
Due to the nature of this true story, the family and the specific location of the home will remain anonymous at the family’s request.
One of the oldest houses in our little town has more than just your regular family inhabiting it. Over the years, this house has had many different visitors one might surmise are from beyond this plane of existence. The strange tales of spooky things that have been seen and experienced by the family are just too many to count according to those who have lived through them.
Some of the more disconcerting phenomena have included hearing names whispered when no one else was around, inexplicable red lights over doorways, and terrifyingly, the appearance of a disembodied floating head are just a few of the eerie events witnessed in this home.
Only a few owners have resided in this historic house since it was built well over a century ago, including the large family who has now lived in or utilized it for decades. As the family grew, they spread out and live in surrounding homes as well. But still, keep this enchanting home as a hub.
When asked if the family had ever reached out to anyone to investigate the apparitions one family member stated, “We haven’t invited anyone over to see what is going on with the house. Any variant in the routine happenings of the house, (like) renovations, parties, holidays etc., seem to make the activity worse,” and, “We have been living with them for so long that it seems best to just leave them alone.”
Once when Berthoud had no power, one of the siblings came over to take a shower as the house has gas heat. While enjoying their hot shower they began hearing loud crying coming from inside a closet, they quickly finished and left the apparition to its own devices. Another sibling was resting in a hammock and saw a cloud of mist floating by as they tried to relax in the yard. Workers have seen faces in upper stories as they approached the home when no one has been there. According to the family, you never feel alone in the house – you always feel like you are being watched. There seem to be sounds from everywhere especially the older parts of the home, sounds of people walking upstairs when no one is there. There was even a floating bottom half of a man seen in the basement. Glass has been known to shatter without cause, like a punch bowl at a big gathering that seemed to explode out of nowhere. Family members have been sleeping peacefully and were awakened by a cloud of cloying perfume or by a floating orb.
Thankfully, aside from the exploding glass that happens from time to time, the family reports that, “…no one has ever been hurt. Just startled or scared.”
Over the years, this house has had more than its fair share of deaths associated with the property, including one from tuberculosis and another from a lightning strike. But not all the incidents could be connected to those dearly departed souls; the family says they feel like there are many different spirits inhabiting this place. One of the siblings said, “I think that they are there because the house is so old and there has been a lot of life and death going on there. We were told that there used to be an old Native American burial place on the property.” Some have even surmised there could perhaps be a portal of some kind at the home’s location, a connection between realms.
A house inhabited by disembodied spirits of the deceased can be very disturbing. Still, this family feels these spectral incidents are not malevolent or vengeful spirits out for an act of revenge, but simply a part of their home. It wouldn’t be their house in Berthoud without it. The family doesn’t want to let their location be known, as they don’t want to excite their special guests too much during this time of year when ghosts are known to come out to socialize. They prefer to let the spirits do what they want on their own. So, during this spooky season, if you see mist floating around as you are trick or treating, just know it’s a spirit enjoying the air or saying hello. Who knows what else they might have to say?
