Have patrons or friends told you, “You serve the best chili!” Now is the time to find out. RAFT (Rural Alternative for Transportation) is holding its Annual Chile Cook-off Jan. 21 at City Star Brewing to find the Best of Berthoud Chile for 2020. Restaurants, organizations, and individuals may apply to be a contestant and receive “bragging rights” for the best chili in town.  Bring attention to your establishment or organization or family recipe. Apply two ways: (1) Pick up an application at the Berthoud Weekly Surveyor Office at 440 Mountain Ave., complete it and return it by Dec. 15to the BWS office; or (2) Complete and submit an application online at citystarbrewing.com/chili. Contestants will be selected on a first-come basis because space is a consideration.

Requirements for participation are easy once selected as a contestant. Prepare 2 gallons of your best chili and any accompanying condiments. Deliver to City Star Brewing in a container of your choice that will keep the chili hot along with an extension cord by 4 p.m. on the day of the contest—Tuesday, Jan. 21. To add more fun to the event, contestants are encouraged to serve their own chili and wear attire to bring attention to their entry.  If requested, RAFT volunteers can serve the chili for contestants.

In 2019 the winner for bragging rights to Best of Berthoud Chili was Berthoud Fire Crew C.

All proceeds will go to RAFT the local volunteer driver program that began in 2014 as a program under the charitable corporation Berthoud Golden Links. RAFT provides rides to older adults and adults with disabilities residing within the Berthoud Fire Protection District for no fee. RAFT operates on a donation basis and grants. The Fire Protection District covers a 106 square mile area. RAFT drivers take eligible riders for appointments, work or social functions in Berthoud, Loveland or Longmont in their own vehicles. There is one PARA Van available for adults who are dependent on a wheelchair for mobility.  To request a ride from RAFT  phone: 970-532-0808; to volunteer as a driver for RAFT  phone 970-532-0808; to ask questions about the chili cook-off event phone Ruth Fletcher-Carter at 970-391-8898.

If you can’t be a contestant—be a participant. Tickets for sampling and voting on the Best of Berthoud chili will be sold for $10 at the door. The event begins at 5 p.m. and continues until 9 p.m. at City Start Brewing on Jan. 21. Besides great chili to be sampled, music will be provided by guest band Pennies on the Track. The winner of the cook-off will be announced at 8 p.m. and will for 2020 hold the distinction of making the Best of Berthoud Chile in 2020.
