A+ Heating and A/C, a long-time Berthoud business, is under new ownership but retains a genetic connection between old and new management.
Darren Knoll owned and operated A+ from 2014 to early 2023 when he decided it was time to retire. Two other companies were ready to buy the business, but Knoll didn’t feel his customers would get the service they deserved if they were absorbed into another company’s customer base. He held out a little longer.

While Knoll was busy building A+ by servicing many loyal customers in and around Berthoud, his young cousin, Zach Carre, had graduated from Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebr., the same place Knoll had learned the trade about 35 years before. Carre became a fully licensed tradesman in heating & air at the age of 16. After graduating, he worked in North Platte before moving to Lincoln where he gained additional experience working with a respected HVAC company, John Henry’s.

“I never really gave Zach much of a thought because I knew how successful he was working in Lincoln,” recalled Knoll, thinking Carre wouldn’t want to leave Nebraska. “[One day] I mentioned to Zach that I would be selling and he got really excited. I knew at that moment that he would be the perfect person to take over, because he has a great personality and has tons of technical experience.”

Knoll’s only reservation was his cousin’s height, “His biggest downfall is he is a little tall,” he laughed, “I don’t know who was happier about the transaction, him or me, but it is working out for both of us.”

Carre worked with Knoll for about a month to learn the office functions. He took full control of A+ on March 1 and has been busy ever since. Carre is providing all the same services previously offered by Knoll but he’s also made a few changes. He has added maintenance and installation for geothermal heat pumps and boilers to the company’s list of services and he’s also taken the company paperless. “I’ll service any make or model of A/C or heater,” says Carre, “I do commercial work, like rooftop and commercial boilers and commercial split systems and any residential system.”

The only thing missing from Carre’s new life in Colorado is his fiancé, who will be joining him here after she finishes her bio-med degree in May. Darren Knoll and his wife plan to retire in Florida later this summer.

Carre is on call 24 hours a day and offers bi-annual maintenance contracts which save customers $75 per year for spring and fall service calls, plus a 15% discount on any necessary repairs.
The company contact information remains the same. To make an appointment, call 970-302-2532.
