A new face at an old place

Somewhere along the road from Nepal to Colorado, Triloki Patel caught the business bug and couldn’t shake it. In January 2022, he bought his second independent business when he purchased Grandpa’s Café—a long-time Berthoud establishment known for its down-home meals, fresh ingredients and friendly service. And according to Patel, it will stay that way.

Patel’s entrepreneurial training started soon after he arrived in Colorado in 2015 after winning what’s known as the “green card lottery” through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV Program). Through the DV Program, the United States allows up to 55,000 randomly selected people to obtain legal, permanent residency. Applicants are individuals from countries with low rates of recent immigration. It is a luck-of-the-draw process.

Once here, Patel’s original plan was to study science, but he found a new passion for the food industry. After years of restaurant work spanning the Front Range from Colorado Springs to Denver, to Longmont, he leaped into ownership in late 2017, when he opened a specialty store—Longs Peak Grocery—featuring Nepalese, Indian and other Asian groceries. He still runs the store in Longmont where he currently lives. But he likes Berthoud, too. When Grandpa’s became available, he bought it.

“This is a good location in a growing area. I have no plans for making any immediate changes. Maybe modify the same menu, but no change in format. No Indian or Nepalese menu right now. People like Grandpa’s. They are excited about the change of ownership. I liked it right away. Everything is clean. We serve the same menu as before. Burgers remain a top seller.” When asked whether a good chai tea could be in our future, Patel smiled but didn’t rule it out.

The pandemic hit restaurants especially hard, but Patel sees a brighter future for business in Berthoud where growth needs businesses, and he needs growth. “I can continue learning here, growing professionally as the area grows, too. My wife and I plan to move to Berthoud, be locals, and buy a house here. I want the people here to help us grow. We aim to provide the best service, tasty food, and look here, we just got our liquor license!” He points to it on the wall. His smile says it all.

Grandpa’s at 903 Mountain Avenue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Breakfast is served all day and features a wide variety of egg dishes from omelets to benedicts to huevos rancheros along with the popular cini-minis, pancakes and beignets. Lunch and dinner choices feature soups, salads, sandwiches and assorted steak, chicken and fish entrees. There’s something for every palate at Grandpa’s.

A new face in an old place. Let’s give a warm welcome to Triloki Patel.
